Oil on board, 14 x 10 inches, 20 x 16 inches with frame, unsigned, c. 1840. The veneer frame is typical and likely original to the piece. Prior wavered between an obvious ambition to paint in the academic manner and his true genius and calling for the simple. His flat, two dimensional likenesses are sometimes extraordinary in their success at capturing the essential character of the sitter in a few brief strokes. Such is the case in this example, which presents a woman pleased with herself ...click for details

Oil on canvas, 17 x 21 inches, 24 1/2 x 28 1/2 with frame, signed lower right "M.S. Pearson, '27". Physical handicap has been the starting point of many artistic careers: the itinerant portraitist, Joseph Whiting Stock (1815-1855) and Gloucester's own painter of the sea, Fitz Henry Lane (1804-1865) come to mind. In Marguerite Pearson's case, misfortune came at a vulnerable time for a young woman. Contracting polio at age sixteen, she lost the use of her legs and had to aban ...click for details

Oil on pressed panel, 13 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches, signed l.r. and dated "63". One of the more interesting paths in the history of modern art leads from the French "primitive" painter, Henri Rousseau, to modern-day Paris and, specifically to 61, rue de Grenelle, the location of La Fondation Dina Vierny-Musee Maillol. Dina Vierny, a French artist's model was "discovered" at the age of 15 by the sculptor Aristede Maillol. Although they had not previously met, Maillol w ...click for details
