$6,500

Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 inches plus frame, unsigned. The use of elaborate drapery, meticulously-defined lace, a landscape vignette including a stream and a document personal to the sitter (the sheet music) clearly indicate the authorship of Charles Peale Polk (1767-1822), the orphaned nephew of Charles Willson Peale. Polk grew up in the famous artist's home in Philadelphia. Best known as a copyist of his uncle's famous portrait of George Washington, he also painted many commissioned portr ...click for details

He is represented in the Peabody Essex Museum by a drawing of the Newburyport vessel "Black Prince" (1873) and in the Mystic Seaport Museum by an oil of the yacht "Neptune" of New York (1866). This luminous rendering of a sailing ship being nudged thr ...click for details

Oil on paper mounted on canvas, 32.75 x 22.75 inches, unsigned. This enigmatic portrait bears all the stylistic characteristics of the justly-admired deaf mute limner of Connecticut and Maine, John Brewster, Jr. Though much has been written about this singular figure, Harlan Lane's fascinating book, "A Deaf Artist in Early America: The Worlds of John Brewster, Jr." (Beacon Press, 2004) is definitive. The most frequently noted characteristic of a Brewster portrait is his unique, pen ...click for details

Oil on canvas, 32 x 40 inches, 40 x 48 framed, signed lower left. As Peter Baldaia noted in his excellent catalogue ("Marion Huse, An Artist's Evolution", Brockton Art Museum, 1985), this c. 1940 work (No. 41 in the catalogue) was painted from the artist's apartment window. It depicts the late afternoon shift arriving at the Springfield, Mass. Armory on a bleak winter day. From 1925 to 1940 Huse operated and taught at the Springfield School of Art. During the 30's, she was ...click for details

$2,200

Oil on board, 14 x 10 inches, 20 x 16 inches with frame, unsigned, c. 1840. The veneer frame is typical and likely original to the piece. Prior wavered between an obvious ambition to paint in the academic manner and his true genius and calling for the simple. His flat, two dimensional likenesses are sometimes extraordinary in their success at capturing the essential character of the sitter in a few brief strokes. Such is the case in this example, which presents a woman pleased with herself ...click for details

$1,800

Oil on wood panel, 5 inches x 3.75 inches plus frame. This diminutive folk masterpiece elucidates the essence of that genre, namely the ability of the relatively untutored hand to achieve true and honest expression. The canine, of less than noble lineage, has been banished to the cellar for some unknown transgression. His best friend has stolen down the stairs in his bare feet to provide comfort and companionship. A gem.

In any event, he was engaged in art studies at an early age with Junius Brutus Stearns, Theodore Kaufman and at the National Academy. Subsequently, he studied for two years in Munich and Paris. He was well-established in Brooklyn by 1860, his home until his death in 1913. This in ...click for details
