The noble race of the white English Bull Terrier came into its own in the early 19th century under the selective breeding of James Hinks of Birmingham. "Cow Cooper" was born in impoverished circumstances but managed to gain a coveted position at the Royal Academy school where he earned the encouragement of Sir Thomas Lawrence. Oil on canvas, 14 x 20 1/2 inches plus frame, signed "J.F.Williams", lower left. Truly a "Scottish Constable", young Perthshire-born Williams found work in London as a stage-set decorator. Wanting to dedicate his life to "pure art", he returned to Edinburgh in 1810, exhibiting at the Associated Artists of Edinburgh.
