$1,200

Oil on canvas mounted on board, 9.25 x 7 inches (sight), signed with initials "ELH" and dated 1863 lower left. The painting is in a replacement frame, but the original frame, which is restorable, will accompany the work. A label on the latter frame indicates that the owner at some point was a "Mrs. D.D. Stow." Aside from his interest in architecture, Henry had an abiding fascination with costume. In this little painting, a kneeling woman in a dark skirt, white blouse and head ...click for details

$2,400

Oil on canvas, 24 x 20 inches, 32 x 28 overall. A picture of considerable charm and finesse, this c. 1850 rendering of an organ grinder or wandering pedlar and his becapped monkey is strongly reminiscent of the work of the American master of the intimate genre scene, Francis W. Edmonds (1806-1863), though the technique is less hard-edged. Edmonds painted a much more elaborate work on this theme, "The Organ Grinder", 1848. The precedents are in early Dutch art, particularly the genre ...click for details

$1.800

Oil on board, 12 x 18 inches plus frame, unsigned. Early landscapes including Vermont's Lake Champlain are relatively rare, though Kensett painted a view looking east across the lake in 1856. The unpredictable but talented Charles Heyde also painted several views including a small (6" x 9") view of Appletree Point, the promontory just to the north. The latter work is included in the collection of 12 Heyde paintings in the Shelburne Museum. The painting offered here was likely execu ...click for details
