Peggy Bacon (1895-1987). Cafe de la Rotonde
Drypoint c. 1921, plate size 7 x 10 inches, matted and framed under glass, overall appx. 15.75 x 18 inches, signed in pencil lower right margin, titled in pencil lower left margin. The famous Cafe de la Rotonde, at the corner of Boulevard du Montparnasse and Boulevard Raspail, was the gathering place for both major and minor artists, writers and their followers during the years between the two World Wars. Frequented by Picasso, Modigliani, Rivera and Foujita (identified by his trademark mustache and rimmed glasses in this work), its raucous atmosphere is admirably portrayed here. Bacon's achievements as an artist, illustrator and author are too voluminous to list here. Her combination of humor and technical prowess is comparable to that of the famous 18th-century English caricaturist James Gillray, but her humor is infinitely more subtle.
