| Watercolor on paper, 9 x 14 inches (sight), signed lower left, titled on label verso. Nothing definite is known of Maplestone before 1841, when he was elected an Associate of the New Society of Painters in Watercolour. He was raised to full membership in 1848. He exhibited there regularly giving several addresses, mostly in London, where he died Jan. 17, 1884. He left an only son and six daughters, one of whom, Elizabeth, became an artist of some note, specializing in history paintings. F. G. Roe wrote a short, illustrated article on the Maplestones for the Jan./April, 1925 issue of "Connoisseur" in which he noted: "Like so many artists of his time, Maplestone was probably obliged to "pot-boil", with the result that many of his less important drawings are characterized by a superficial prettiness." Our "Neglected Farm" clearly is not among the prettified. We agree with the Jeremy North Gallery ex. label verso: "A strange, melancholy rural scene--dilapidated farmhouse, broken gate, burdened woman, sleeping (or drunken) man: Withal, a beautifully-drawn and moody watercolor by a gifted but eccentric artist." | ||
