| Oil on canvas, 14 x 20 1/2 inches plus frame, signed "J.F.Williams", lower left. Truly a "Scottish Constable", young Perthshire-born Williams found work in London as a stage-set decorator. Wanting to dedicate his life to "pure art", he returned to Edinburgh in 1810, exhibiting at the Associated Artists of Edinburgh. He was one of the founders of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1826 and continued to exhibit there and in London until his death in Glasgow at age 61. Roughly contemporary with John Constable, who gained national fame in 1824 with the award of a gold medal at the Paris Salon, Williams doubtlessly knew Constables's work and shared with him a common bond with nature. Both imbued their landscapes with a reverence for nature's power over man, symbolized by an ever-changing sky above. For Constable, the shifting cloud formations were "the key note, the standard of scale and the chief organ of sentiment." So it was for Williams. | ||
