| Watercolor on paper, 15.25 x 19.25 inches (sight, plus mat and frame), estate-stamped. From the artist's estate through Hirsch & Adler Galleries, New York (label verso). The view is looking toward Front Beach, Rockport, Massachusetts with the Old Cemetery in the foreground and the Front Beach Firehouse to the left. Kuehne came to this country with his family at the age of 14. They eventually settled in New York City where Kuehne studied at The Chase School with Chase, Kenneth Hayes Miller and Henri. Primarily a landscapist, he travelled widely, principally in Spain, spending his summers in Gloucester and Rockport on Cape Ann. During the Depression he survived by making and selling furniture and decorative objects, many of which remain in Cape Ann collections. He exhibited widely (Corcoran Gallery, Whitney Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Carnegie Institute, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts) and his work is represented in many museum collections. In this work, the juxtaposition of the old cemetery and the lively beach-goers obviously caught his sense of whimsy and he created a sort of Cape Ann "memento mori." A lively composition with subtle color and drawing. | ||
