| Oil on canvas, 16 x 24 inches plus frame, signed and dated "T.S.Cooper 1842" lower left. "Cow Cooper" was born in impoverished circumstances but managed to gain a coveted position at the Royal Academy school where he earned the encouragement of Sir Thomas Lawrence. Persistent money problems, however, forced him to seek a livelihood on the Continent. In a fortunate turn, he was befriended by the famous animal painter Eugene Verboeckhoven (1707-1881). Returned to England by 1831, Cooper had acquired a wife, along with a more fluid brush technique. He proceeded to achieve wide professional recognition and financial success. Among his admirers was Queen Victoria, who commissioned him to paint the Royal herd of Jerseys. This fine early example of his work is in an antique Aberdeen frame, completely restored and gold-leafed and bearing the framer's label. | ||
