| Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 inches plus old maple frame, unsigned, professionally lined to show the original inscription verso. This intriguing survivor clearly illustrates that politics has always been an unruly affair. The assembled worthies, in various states of inebriation and/or dementia, have a lively discourse going, punctuated by calls for more potent libations. If nothing is being settled, at least a good time is being had by all. The ink inscription reads: "The Boden (?) Politicks in Olden Times. 1704." This is a precursor of the later work of John Collier (1708-1786), called "Tim Bobbin." who produced "a large number of pictures of buffoons and hideous old women, painted in a style which is absolutely devoid of merit. They found a ready market in the north of England and many specimens were until lately to be met with chiefly in the drinking rooms of old public houses." (C. W. Sutton in the DNB.)
