| Sanguine on paper, sheet 20 x 16 inches, signed lower left, custom gold leaf frame. Kroll wrote in 1967: "Leo Ornstein had a studio on the same floor right next to mine (at 253 W. 42nd St. N. Y.), so we were in and out of each other's places rather frequently. I watched him while he played the piano..." This recently discovered master drawing is a finished study for Kroll's famous oil, "Leo Ornstein at the Piano", painted in 1918 and acquired by the Art Institute of Chicago in 1919 (image available on the Institute's website.)
