| Oil on canvas 36 x 28.5 inches (unframed). A rare Western-style portrait of a gentleman of high station, possibly a portrait of Chinese statesman Li Hongzhang (1823-1901). There are a number of photographs of Li available on the internet, though all were taken in his advanced age. That reproduced in "Britannica Online " is best. The style suggests an artist trained in the Western tradition of portraiture, possibly through contact with George Chinnery (1774-1852) or Lamqua (1801-1860).The "Shou" character at upper right may indicate that this was a birthday portrait. | ||
