| Ink and wash on paper, sheet size 14 x 9 3/4 inches, unframed, signed and dated "Walt Kuhn 1944" l.r. of one side. William Kuhn's early days as a cartoonist in San Francisco, where he began to sign himself "Walt", continued into a lifetime of sketching the life around him. One of the major movers in the production of the groundbreaking Armory Show of 1913, he later became famous for his haunting Modernist clown pictures. This double-sided drawing shows him as the compulsive sketcher he was, deftly extracting something compelling and interesting from a moment in time. | ||
