| A most unusual Ming (likely Wanli) dynasty survivor. 8.75 long x 6.5 inches high. Buff-colored pottery lion of exuberant personality, glazed in lead glazes of deep green, pea green, amber and cream with an aubergine brocaded ball in its mouth. There is also a freely-moving ball in the hollow interior. The narrow ends of the base have partially-glazed areas with (original) square holes, the base unglazed, areas of chipping and missing glaze, a hole drilled in the base (for mounting purposes) in modern times. Occasionally one encounters a piece whose original decorative function is a mystery. The figure has the exuberance of the iconic "Monkey God" roof tile in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (see Wu Tung, "Earth Transformed", MFA Publications, Boston, 2001) but its context is a cipher. | ||
